Hair loss and the menopause!

Hair loss can be a symptom of the menopause.

As our hormones decline in midlife our hair to starts to grow slower and become thinner.

There can also be an increase in male hormones which may cause facial hair growth, hence the appearance of ‘granny chin hair’!

Be aware thought that there may be other factors causing hair loss such as stress, illness or a bad diet.

These are my top tips to help keep your locks healthy!

  1. Reduce stress – Find some time for yourself whether that’s going for a walk, taking a long hot soak, meditating, doing yoga or pilates, reading or meeting a friend for coffee. It’s the constant daily stressors such as looking after elderly parents and teenagers at the same time, working full time, going through the menopause with many of its symptoms that can cause our bodies to feel stressed so we need to take care of ourselves first and foremost!
  2. Move more – Exercise helps balance hormones and reduce stress so get moving whether it’s walking, running, weight training, tennis, yoga, pilates and mix it up so that you don’t get bored and you are always challenging your body.
  3. Eat a balanced diet – Include healthy fats in your diet which will help with maintaining glossy hair so eat more oily fish, flaxseed oil, olive oil, nuts, seeds avocadoes etc… It might be an idea to take a Vitamin B supplement especially Vitamin B6.
  4. Hydrate – Drink plenty of water as our bodies are made up of 70% water and will not function well if dehydrated. Aim for 6 – 8 glasses every day.
  5. Avoid heat products – Keep away from heat products on your hair such as hair straighteners, curlers, hair dryers and also avoid hair dye if possible or buy natural products as these cause damage to already thinning hair.
