PILATES is an exercise technique that uses slow and controlled movements to improve posture strengthen muscles, mobilise joints and increase flexibility. It focuses on the ‘core’ muscles of the body which are the deep abdominal muscles and uses these to control the movements. It is great for those with lower back pain through sitting at a desk all day or for those who do a lot of driving every day. Although it focuses mainly on the ‘core’ of the body Pilates really is an all over body workout and is suitable for beginners as well as athletes as you work at your own pace and progress in your own time. I get a lot of feedback from my Pilates clients about how great it makes them feel. They feel stronger, more supple, taller and invigorated after the class. I would advise if you are a complete beginner to perhaps have a one to one before joining a class unless that class is specifically for beginners as there is a lot to learn about breathing, neutral spine, core engagement etc and can seem a bit daunting at first although when you ‘get it’ it is a very satisfying feeling!

The DVD will consist of a series of Pilates exercises ranging from beginner to intermediate level and I will be using a band for some of the exercises but they can all be done without a band.
