Over 50 and feeling fab, are you?

I am a peri menopausal woman and proud of it! I am always striving to be the best version of myself and aim to be my fittest and healthiest at any age!

I read an article the other day that mentioned ‘The most dangerous exercises if you are over 50’

This is the list…..

1. Long distance running

2. Weighted squats

3. High impact aerobics

4. Overhead press

5. Stair running

6. Bench press

7. Hot yoga

8. Sit ups

9. High intensity interval training

10. Spinning

11. Deadlifts

12. Leg press

13. Lateral pulldowns

14. Mountain climbers

15. Plank twist

16. Boxing

I have done for many years and will continue to do so for many years most of the above! They detailed the reasons why with each exercise but I wont go into every one, I will just say that the reasons they gave could be for everyone and not just the over 50’s! They were basically saying that our joints and bones aren’t as strong as we age and we may harm ourselves doing the above exercises. Also that our balance gets worse so need to be careful in a yoga class! I am speechless! I am 54 and I know a lot of people my age exercising, we are a lot fitter than those that are 20 or 30 years younger! I think what annoys me the most is the generalization that you are over the hill at 50 plus and incapable of performing the above exercises safely and effectively. Surely the opposite applies? Staying fit and strong through mid life is surely more important than worrying about an injury that could happen ……TO ANYONE!! Lifting weights gives me strong muscles which protect my joints, My pilates helps with balance and having a strong core which in turn protects my back. My yoga helps keep me flexible which will in turn prevent me from getting injured. My high impact aerobics is good for my heart and my soul!! I understand if you are new to exercise you should be aware of the dangers but again doesn’t that apply to everyone? Appropriate exercise for your fitness level I’ll accept but don’t put an age on it!! What do you think and do you do an exercise that is on the list and are over 50?
